Understanding Cellular Trail Camera Data
Cellular trail cameras transmit photos over 4G LTE networks. Most cameras send compressed thumbnails by default to minimize data usage. Key considerations:
- Thumbnail mode sends small preview images (30-80 KB) that you can view on your phone app. Full-resolution images stay on the SD card.
- Full-resolution transmission sends the complete photo file (2-6 MB), using 20-50x more data than thumbnails.
- Video clips are the biggest data consumers. A 10-second 1080p clip can use 5-10 MB per transmission.
- Most cellular plans are photo-based (charging per photo) rather than data-based (charging per GB). Check your carrier's plan structure.
