What to Look for in a Trail Camera
Photo Resolution (MP)
Higher megapixels produce sharper images. 16-20MP is fine for basic identification, 24-32MP is the sweet spot for most users, and 48MP+ allows cropping while maintaining detail.
Trigger Speed
Faster trigger speeds capture more wildlife. Under 0.2 seconds is excellent for fast-moving game, 0.3-0.5s is good for most applications, and over 0.5s may miss quick animals.
Detection Range
Determines how far away the camera can sense motion. 60-80ft covers most trail setups, while 100ft+ is ideal for open fields and food plots.
Flash Type
No-glow (invisible) is best for security and skittish game. Low-glow (faint red) offers better night images. White flash provides full-color night photos but may spook wildlife.
Connectivity
Standard (SD card) is cheapest and has best battery life. WiFi allows wireless download within range. Cellular sends photos anywhere but requires a monthly data plan.
