Everything you need to know about trail cameras

Find answers to common questions about trail cameras, game cameras, and how to use our comparison tools.

1 What is a trail camera?
A trail camera (also called a game camera) is a weatherproof, battery-powered camera that uses a motion sensor to automatically capture photos or video of wildlife, people, or vehicles. They're commonly used for hunting scouting, property security, and wildlife observation.
2 How do I choose the right trail camera resolution?
For basic game identification, 16-20MP is sufficient. For detailed species identification or trophy scoring, 24-48MP provides sharper detail. Higher resolution means larger file sizes, which fills SD cards faster and uses more cellular data. For most hunters, 24-32MP offers the best balance of quality and practicality.
3 What is the difference between cellular, WiFi, and standard trail cameras?
Standard cameras store images on an SD card you retrieve manually. WiFi cameras let you download photos wirelessly within 50-100 feet. Cellular cameras transmit photos to your phone via LTE from anywhere but require a monthly data plan ($5-$15/month). Choose based on how often you can visit the camera location.
4 How long do trail camera batteries last?
Standard cameras on AA batteries last 3-8 months with moderate use (20-50 photos/day). Cellular cameras last 1-3 months due to data transmission. Solar-powered cameras can run indefinitely with adequate sunlight. Cold weather reduces battery life by 20-40%. Use our Battery Life Calculator for a personalized estimate.
5 What flash type should I choose?
No-glow (black LED) flash is invisible and best for security and skittish game. Low-glow (red LED) produces a faint red light but captures better night images. White flash produces full-color night photos but may spook wildlife. For most hunting, no-glow or low-glow is recommended.
